How Long Does Carpet Take to Dry After Steam Cleaning?
What to expect after a professional clean, and what you can do to speed things up.
Most carpet is dry to walk on within a few hours of a professional steam clean, and fully dry not long after. The exact time depends on a handful of things, and a few of them are in your hands.
"Steam cleaning" is the everyday name for hot water extraction: hot water and a cleaning solution go into the carpet, and powerful suction pulls the water and the dirt back out. The more water that's extracted, the faster the carpet dries.
What affects drying time
Airflow is the biggest factor. A room with open windows or a fan running dries far faster than a closed-up room.
Humidity and the weather matter too — carpet dries more slowly on a cold, damp or humid day than on a warm, dry one.
Thick, dense or deep-pile carpet holds more moisture than a thin, flat weave, and a very dirty carpet can need extra passes, which means more moisture to dry.
How to help carpet dry faster
Open windows and doors where you can, and run ceiling fans or portable fans. Heating or air conditioning also helps move the moisture out of the room.
Keep shoes and pets off the carpet until it's dry to the touch, and wait before putting furniture back. If you have to replace furniture while the carpet is still damp, put something like a clean plastic block or foil under the legs so the legs don't leave marks.
When to get in touch
If the carpet still feels damp well after the first day, or has a musty smell, let us know. It's worth looking at the airflow in the room, and we'll tell you what to do next.
